Buy Local. Every city in America seems to exclaim this slogan. Businesses have logos in their window, they have posters on the wall, they have flyers to hand out and banners on the streets. Everywhere you go we see the signs of the local businesses pleading with the public shop here, do business here, eat here.
- What is a Buy Local Campaign?
- Why should we do it?
- Is it worth the bother?
- How does it work?
These are some of the questions you may have, this is the place to find your answers.
Project Background
Early 2010 a group of Arlington leaders formed the Buy Local Arlington committee. This is a partnership between City of Arlington, the Downtown Arlington Business Association and the Arlington-Smokey Point Chamber of Commerce.
Our primary objective is to encourage Arlington residents and business owners to think Arlington when considering where to purchase. We want to create widespread awareness about the community benefits of choosing to shop locally in our Arlington stores.
How are we spreading the message?
Local meetings & Events (Chamber events and meetings, Downtown Arlington events and meetings, Kiwanis, Rotary, Fly In, 4th of July Parade to name a few)
Distributing print items via stores
Signage/Banners/Pole Flags (SR 530, SR 9, 172nd, Division Street)
Local Publications—Arlington Update Newsletter, Chamber Newsletter
Local media outlets
Facebook page for awareness among residents

It makes good business sense
What is local?
Buying local means shopping at stores that are located in Arlington, Smokey Point or Island Crossing whether it is a national chain store or a locally-owned shop.
Why buy local?
It supports Arlington…
Dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have a positive impact on our community. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, help fund important city services through sales tax promote and make our community more resistant to downturns in the global economy.
It is environmentally friendly…
Buying local can reduce carbon emissions and petroleum use. Local goods require less packaging, waste, and less shipping, saving you time and money.
It builds community…
Local purchases are more likely to be social interactions as well as business transactions- it's great to know your local merchant. Local businesses contribute more to our schools and community events.
It stimulates local charitable giving…
Non-profit organizations in our community receive an average 250% more support from local business owners than they do from large National chains.
Because we have more than you know…
Where we shop, where we eat and have fun—all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of the Arlington Community. We have many goods and services available in Arlington; why not invest in your own community by purchasing local.
